DIRECTORY OF AVAILABLE SEED IN THE WASNET REGION

GHANA

Climatic variability is common. In low-input and rain fed agriculture, crop production is so uncertain that farmers may buy seed only in years of crop failure. In years when seed is not available locally, national programs are obliged to import seed, if available, from countries of the region or elsewhere. A well-documented information system on varieties, quantities, etc., available within the region would be very useful to expedite the process of seed import and export.

This is an important Network activity, as it is the means of identifying seed sources and kinds of seed available in all countries of the region. It is also a critical first step to creating a regional seed market.

In times of emergency when additional seed are needed, this activity can enable a country to identify those countries where seed of the desired kind, amount and quality may be obtained. It thus reduces the harmful effects of the ever-present localized natural disasters in West Africa. And, it helps all countries identify the areas in which its seed may be needed.

The objective of this activity is to publish, on an annual basis, a list of seed stocks available in the different member countries.

SUGGESTED APPROACHES:

Step 1:

Collect information on the seed stocks available in the different countries of the region. It is suggested that the official Country Representative in each country write to the Chief Executive Officer of each seed production/supply agency in his/her country to request a list of crops, varieties and amounts of seed that are available for sale to member countries in the region.

It is recommended that a short description of the quality of the seed (germination, purity, moisture) as well as the area of adaptation is included.

Step 2:

Compile this information per country, per crop, per variety.

Step 3:

Publish this information immediately after it is available. Waiting till the next issue of the newsletter is due will make the information outdated.
